Provision of Used Car Data Early Market Engagement

ONS is looking to identify and engage with industry partners to help bring third party data and/or expertise to access better and more relevant data sources. This will help improve the quality and usefulness of official statistics about our population, society and economy that decision makers, businesses and citizens so urgently need.

ONS is seeking to develop partnerships with organisations that hold information about used car sales in the UK. We are looking into alternative methods for constructing price indices for used cars, which is a highly weighted component of our headline inflation measure. This will require a comprehensive dataset of used car prices and vehicle specifications; variables we require are:

• oPrice
• oManufacturer
• oModel
• oAge
• oMileage
• oEngine size
• oChassis type (eg. hatchback, saloon, estate, etc.)
• oNo. of doors
• oCO2 emissions
• oTransmission type
• oFuel type (e.g. diesel, petrol, battery electric vehicle, plug-in- hybrid electric vehicle, hybrid electric vehicles, etc.)
• oInsurance group

Any additional variables relating to car specification or optional extras would also be useful, for example:

• oTrim level
• oAlloy wheels
• oSat nav
• oMetallic paint (a costed option)
• oSunroof/panoramic roof
• oClimate control

We would also like organisations able to supply sales volume; average prices or expenditure data on used cars to express an interest.

The types of organisations that should consider contacting us include:

• oProviders offering substantial coverage of the whole UK used car market.

Types of support could include:

• oSupply of bulk data extracts
• oSupply of relevant metadata and/or documentation on how data enters the system and how it is processed
• oProvision of aggregated data as defined by ONS
