description
The Boxing Academy is located in a Conservation Area in Central Hackney. Currently it is an Alternative Provision 14-16 year Independent School with 40 pupils. It is due to become a Free School by September 2016. The intention of this project is to provide Free School standard accommodation for 72 pupils including facilities which are specific to the Boxing Academy.
The school currently occupies a three storey 1960’s office building (21/23 Hackney Grove). Two neighbouring Victorian terraces (25/27 Hackney Grove) are being purchased as is a dilapidated community hall (Vernon Hall) at the rear of the site. The community hall has an asbestos cement sheet roof. It is intended that the office building and the Victorian terraces will be re-modelled and refurbished. The community hall will be demolished and replaced by a three storey building possibly of modular construction.
A new atrium style structure will connect the three buildings and accommodate the lift and service core. Elements of the front facades of the Victorian Terraces are listed and will be refurbished as part of the scheme.
Facilities will include classrooms, science room, dining hall, catering kitchen, a boxing gym, showers and a variety of meeting rooms, staff rooms and admin space.
Indicative floor plans are included with this notice which show a proposed outline design solution.
This will be a JCT Design & Build Contract. The contractor will be responsible for all aspects of detailed design, construction, planning, building control and listed building consent. At tender stage the successful contractor will be selected on a basis of education experience, working in occupied premises, appropriate design experience and working in confined inner city locations. It is currently anticipated that the tender submissions will be scored 60% qualitative and 40% quantitative (cost) although may be subject to change.
The school will remain in occupation throughout the duration of the project. A partial completion and handover by January 2018 is considered essential for the school to meet its education commitments.
