The University of Manchester, in its present form, was created in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). After 100 hundred years of working closely together both institutions agreed to form a single university, and on 22 October 2004 they officially combined to form the largest single-site university in the UK.

The University’s aim is to be known worldwide as a place where the highest academic values and educational innovation are cherished, where research prospers and makes a real difference, and where the fruits of scholarship resonate throughout society.

  1. Project Overview

The University campus is the largest single site higher education precinct in the UK. As a consequence it has a large IT infrastructure to support a student population of around 40,000 alongside a staff of nearly 11,000.

This large, diverse community requires a sound infrastructure and equipment to enable it to carry out research, teaching and administration including email, printing, Internet access, and specialist software on a variety of hardware. In addition to a large number of staff desktop machines, both staff and students are able to access almost 3,000 PCs in more than 20 clusters across the campus, some of which operate 24/7.

The management and maintenance of all aspects of IT is undertaken by the University’s IT Services Directorate. Details of their area and responsibilities can be found on the website: http://www.itservices.manchester.ac.uk/
