description
Islington Council invites suitable expressions of interest from suppliers for the procurement of heat to be supplied to Bunhill Heat and Power, which is a heat network owned and operated by the London Borough of Islington (LBI) and located in the south of Islington. Current status / Background LBI launched Bunhill Heat and Power (Bunhill HN) in 2012 fulfilling our objective to deliver decentralised energy infrastructure in the area. The Phase 1 scheme consists of a single energy centre (EC1) and a heat network supplying seven communally heated sites. LBI plan to deliver a Phase 2 expansion of the Bunhill HN by 2016 to supply additional sites and develop a new energy centre (EC2). As a result of new developments within proximity to the Phase 1 and 2 Bunhill HN it is anticipated that significant additional heat demands can connect to the Bunhill HN by 2020. In addition the Council are looking to extend the network (Phase 3) to connect additional existing communally heated council housing estates. The procurement of heat is required to enable Bunhill HN to supply low carbon and lower cost heat to the anticipated additional heat demands. The requirement In 2015 the Council commissioned a study on secondary heat sources within the Bunhill area. This identified the opportunity for heat recovery from the Regent's Canal, utilising a Water Source Heat Pump technology. This has been found to be technically feasible, economically attractive, and could provide a substantial source of local renewable and low carbon heat. The heat must be supplied to the Bunhill HN from a new scheme which recovers heat from the Regent's Canal utilising water source heat pump technology under the terms of a Heat Purchase Agreement with the Council or an alternative arrangement.
