NHS Blood and Transplant "Your Voice" Annual Staff Survey - 2016. Development,Implementation, Analysis and Reporting

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) was established as a Special Health Authority in October 2005. Its remit is the provision of a reliable, efficient supply of blood, organs and associated services to the NHS. The organisation is comprised of four Operating Divisions: Blood Supply, Organ Donation and Transplantation, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services and Group Services. In total, circa 5780 staff are employed, both full and part-time; geographically spread out across the country and occupying a diverse range of roles from frontline operational duties to clinical scientists, consultants and nurses.

NHSBT participates in a national employee engagement survey which is called ‘Your Voice’. The last full national survey took place in September 2014. The response rate for this survey was 68% with a total of 5382 respondents. The NHSBT survey in 2014 resulted in an overall NHS engagement score of 3.56/5. There were three themes which arose from this survey as opportunities from which action planning was initiated. These were: Harassment, Bullying and Abuse, Managers and Leadership, as well as Organisational Communication. As a result of the outcomes of this survey, NHSBT carried out a number of corporate and directorate level action plans.

The 2016 Your Voice survey will be used to continue to help us to assess NHSBT’s progress against these actions, benchmark NHSBT against the outcomes of its previous surveys while providing it with opportunities for future action planning.

A full ‘Your Voice’ survey will be carried out on October 17th, 2016 for six weeks – ending on the 25th November 2016, and will be distributed to circa 5400 employees . It will seek to address employees’ current opinions on subjects such as working for NHSBT, their own jobs, work/life balance, working relationships, equality diversity and inclusion, leadership and direction, staff development and communication channels.

The outcome of the survey will need to deliver reports that include engagement scores as well as include a number of other reporting components.The NHSBT survey in 2014 resulted in an overall NHS engagement score of score of 3.56/5. The objective therefore is to evaluate current opinions and analyse improvements or weaknesses since the last survey.

NHSBT wishes to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced supplier who has extensive experience in the development, implementation, facilitation and analysis/dissemination of surveys and survey results.

It is vitally important that the results of the 2016 survey clearly demonstrate NHSBT strengths, areas for improvement and any weaknesses in a clear and simple format which is easy to read, engaging and understandable.

NHSBT must improve upon its 68% response rate from 2014.

In 2016, the survey will be implemented entirely online,in previous years mobile teams received paper based versions of the survey. The supplier will need to work with NHSBT to ensure the success of an online survey nationally.
