description

The work package objective is to develop a safety critical training package for the GB rail industry.

To develop new training materials and update existing materials to support all members of the industry that are involved in safety critical communications (SCC). These materials will cover more than just the assessment process. The materials would be developed to support: initial training of frontline staff, development training of existing staff, assessor training, communication review group (CRG) member training, CRG Chair training and sharing good practice around SCC practice and protocols. Training and support is provided to some of these groups already, however some have yet to be fully evaluated and others are now out of date. Training is not currently offered to CRG Chairs or CRG members. It is proposed that the updated materials are published online, to allow greater accessibility and availability across industry.

To produce a communications manual as a companion to the on-line resources. It is proposed that the web-based resource and manual would be produced in modular format, in order to ensure all target group’s requirements are met.

To develop a set of national criteria for industry-wide communications training, in order to encourage the industry to create their own materials to an acceptable industry standard. It is proposed that any industry materials produced would become a sub-component of the main online offering; creating examples of good practice and allowing industry to tailor training to the changing risk profile.

To develop a warehouse of communication data which provides information on communication performance and is used to provide practical examples and data for the training materials.

In order to inform the content of the training and accompanying manual, work will be undertaken to assess what training is required and the quality of existing training. For instance, there is currently no formal training for people chairing and participating in CRGs, whilst examples of good practice for the training of assessors exists already in different parts of the industry.
