description
In 2019, the Committee for Standards in Public Life published a report into Local Government Ethical Standards. Within the report the Committee recommended that the Local Government Association (LGA) develop an updated Model Councillor Code of Conduct. The LGA accepted this recommendation and during 2020 undertook an extensive consultation with the sector to revise and renew the LGA's Model Councillor Code of Conduct (2020). A key finding from the consultation was the need for guidance and training to support councils and councillors to embed the principles of the Code.
The LGA Councillor Model Code of Conduct was published in December 2020 and in June 2021 the LGA published a Guide for councillors on the LGA Councillor Model Code of Conduct to support councillors in their understanding of the practical application of the Code.
The LGA is now looking to develop a training pack which council officers can use to train councillors on the LGA Model Code of Conduct and the principles of good councillor conduct that underpin it.
This work comes under the LGA Business Priority, Strong local democracy and supports our aims to clearly articulate the standards expected of anyone engaging in public and political discourse and debate and what is needed to achieve those standards.
