QU470 - Celebrating Communities: Community Support

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has been described as a Games for everyone and will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Birmingham and its people on the global stage. The Games will generate real opportunities for Birmingham to realise benefits before, during and after the event right across the city. Opportunities which would simply not exist for the residents and communities of Birmingham, without hosting the Games.

The Council is launching Celebrating Communities; a universal small grant award related to Birmingham 2022, which will enable communities to carry out more localised activities, such as street parties, picnics and community celebrations in the run up to and during the time of the Games. The aim is to excite communities, to drive up local level engagement and use the Games as the catalyst to celebrate Birmingham's local communities and their linkages to the Commonwealth.

Every ward in Birmingham will be able to bid for funding against three themes:

• oGetting Active - encouraging communities to get out and get active by participating in sports and recreational activities. The overriding aim should be to encourage residents, of all abilities and ages, to engage in physical activity and improve their health and wellbeing.
• oReady, Steady, Fun - delivering community projects to ensure a local area is Games ready and hosting community celebrations to develop active citizenship and reduce loneliness and social isolation.
• oCelebrating Culture - developing community led cultural events and initiatives that encourage intergenerational activities. Proposed schemes must harness the power of culture to bring people together, celebrate their identities, and the culture, heritage and stories of their communities.

The successful provider will provide the following evidence/information as part of their proposal:

• Evidence of their experience of working on similar programmes at community level
• Evidence of community engagement practice and referees
• Recommendations for how they will approach this programme, ensuring that delivery is within the timeline and meets the required deliverables, based on experience gained from similar work experience

First round of support to be delivered in April to July 2021 and the second round in October to February 2022. These dates may be subject to some change as the programme progresses.
