description

The University is a lead partner in the Newcastle Science City initiative which promotes Newcastle as a city of science across the world. The 24-acre site will become an exemplar in sustainable urban development, attracting leading edge science and technology organisations to a mixed new community which will encompass a variety of educational, business, residential and leisure uses. Enabling, infrastructure and public realm works are underway on Science Central to make the site development ready and the first building, The Core, now open. The design for the Urban Sciences Building has begun and is expected to open at the beginning of the academic year in September 2017. The next building to follow the Urban Sciences Building is the Conference & Learning Centre (CaLC) (formerly known as the Teaching Centre). There is a need for new facilities for the University's Business School and also new facilities to accommodate the University's conferencing requirements. The CaLC has been identified as the solution for these requirements. The CaLC will provide conferencing facilities, lecture theatres, offices for co-located staff and teaching rooms; it is to be designed to complement and be compatible with the Urban Sciences building and the Science City master plan. The net construction cost of the build has been estimated at between circa £20m, with the total cost for delivering the scheme estimated at £34.3m. The building is to be designed to BREEAM Excellent. Completion of the build is to be by August 2018. We are currently out to tender for the appointment of a design team to produce a design to RIBA Stage 4, to allow a main contractor to then be appointed on a design and build basis, with the design team likely being novated. This tendering exercise is for the recruitment of a project management team, consisting of: Project Manager, NEC Contract Management, Quantity Surveyor, Principal Designer, BIM Manager, BREEAM Assessor and Building Regulations Approved Inspector, utilising Lot 3 of the Durham University Framework Agreement for the Supply of Professional Services (the Framework). Additional information can be found in the attached tender documentation.

Additional information: The purpose of this entry is to publicise the award of a call-off from the Durham University framework agreement: "Lead Consultancy Professional Services for Construction related Projects".
