description

The project is the internal refurbishment of part of the existing Chemistry Building on campus, re-purposing office space that is or contingent with existing laboratories. This may take advantage of the existing services inside an already highly serviced building but further investigation will be required. The purpose of the project is to give a longer-term solution which future-proofs Chemistry and related subjects for projected growth, set against the requirements for teaching modes and student numbers.

Chemistry have identified approx. 160 m2 of potential lab space that could be re-purposed on each of B Floor and C Floor of the Chemistry Building and for an additional 24 to 30 fume hoods to be installed. Lancaster University Facilities have based a high-level cost for re-purposing at approx. £2,800 per m2 plus £20k per fume hood, project-related costs, fees/surveys, contingency and VAT. We have estimated a full project cost of approx. £2M inc VAT.

The project is flexible and could be managed in various ways over a period of time, not necessarily requiring a commitment to refurbish of the entire 320m2 and provision of the full 24 to 30 fume hoods from January 2021. However, the University would like to install as many fume hoods as the project facilitates within this time frame, as they are required for the delivery of undergraduate programmes from January 2022.
