Prior to liquidation in October 2015 SSI (UK) Ltd operated a 4 million tonne per annum integrated iron and steelmaking facility on Teesside. Included in the complex are two coke ovens and by-products plants, a coke oven gas pipeline (or main) and a heavy fuel oil pipeline (or main). As well as providing coke for the iron-making process the coke ovens produced coke oven gas which was used as fuel for the coke ovens and other manufacturing assets and coal tar, which was processed and sold as by-products.
The coke ovens are situated approximately 6km apart and connected by the coke oven gas main (COGM). The COGM, also feeding the other, defunct, manufacturing facilities and the on-site power station is approximately 27km long. The diameter varies across the 27km but the interconnecting main is mostly 24" and 36".
