Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group, (BHCCG) would like to invite interested Providers to an event that is specifically targeted at Directors, Bid Managers and Finance Leaders within the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Market.
Background
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional condition of the bowel that is diagnosed using clinical criteria. Depending on the diagnostic criteria employed, IBS affects around 11% of the population globally. In the UK the estimates from population studies range from 6.2% to 21.7%. Applying this to the population of Brighton and Hove (2013 mid-year estimate is 278,112 people resident in the city) gives an estimate of 31,150 people (using the 11.2% prevalence estimate) – or between 17,250 and 60,350 using the range found in previous UK studies.
Around 30% of people who experience the symptoms of IBS will consult physicians for their IBS symptoms. These people do not have significantly different abdominal symptoms to those who do not consult, but they do have greater levels of anxiety and lower quality of life. In Brighton and Hove this would equate to around 9,350 (based on 11.2% prevalence) or between around 5,150 and 18,100 using the UK range above.
BHCCG is considering the commissioning of a service for people with IBS, based in a community setting.
The event will also give you an opportunity to network with other providers and the commissioners.
