description
This contract is to appoint a main contractor to undertake redevelopment and refurbishment works at Birdoswald Roman Fort, which includes acting as Principal Contractor under CDM 2015.
The site is managed by the English Heritage Trust and consists of a number of buildings which are currently in use as a visitor centre. Set around a courtyard these buildings include an admissions and retail area, small tea room, interpretation galleries, an education room, toilet facilities and storage areas. In addition to these buildings, there is an adjacent farmhouse which is currently used as a bunkhouse for visiting groups.
The works to be undertaken are to re-use these existing buildings to improve and enhance the visitor facilities to create an exemplar scheme for a family friendly attraction, as well as increasing footfall and dwell time on site. This includes the following:
- Create a new welcoming entrance
- Enhance the retail and admissions experience
- Create a new space for interpretation which will allow for a greater opportunity for fun and learning
- Improve and enhance the tea room and catering facilities
- Develop a new space as a family space
- Small scale enabling works will be required within the main contract.
In addition to the main contractor creating these spaces, there are a number of direct client appointed fit out contracts which will be done by other specialist contractors in terms of retail, catering and interpretation.
The works within the courtyard are to be undertaken whilst the external site remains open to the public. There will be a segregated visitor route and the farmhouse will be used as temporary visitor accommodation.
