description
Visit. Sleep. Cycle. Repeat (VSCR) is a visitor economy programme being developed in North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire, by Derbyshire Countryside Service (DCS), around the towns of Chesterfield, Worksop and Mansfield, see Appendix 1.
The VSCR programme area is traditionally seen as a former industrial area, containing working towns, not a destination that supports the visitor economy. In reality, although pockets of socio-economic deprivation remain, the area has excellent natural and built heritage, and with an extensive network of cycling trails, it has the potential to become an alternative short-break destination, renowned for leisure cycling and world-class heritage.
VSCR is at an early stage of development and in 2018 a Destination Plan was published, www.derbyshire.gov.uk/vscr. This outlined a ten year Action Plan to grow the destination by investing in cycling hubs and cycling infrastructure; accommodation; support for Small and Medium Enterprises; and marketing.
The Pleasley Visitor Hub in Bolsover District is identified as a warm prospect and one of the key areas of growth within VSCR, see Appendix 2. The development of the Cycling Trails Programme supports the delivery of the Pleasley Visitor Hub and would create 5.7km of local cycling trails that support the growth of the local visitor economy.
Derbyshire County Council (DCC) is currently preparing a funding application to the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) to support the construction costs of the Cycling Trails Programme. This work has an estimated value of £500,000 and is currently open for tender see https://www.contractsfinder.service.gov.uk/Search/Results - CETE059 VSCR Cycling Programme. This tender will form the basis of the RDPE application.
