description
In order to maintain a high level of access to as many of the collections as possible, the library is now seeking to appoint external suppliers skilled in the conservation treatments of library collections. Suppliers must be able to offer and maintain a high-quality, cost-effective service specifically for conservation and binding.
Suppliers should note that the British Library operates a dual site in the North of England (Yorkshire) and the South (London). This contract is relevant to the London site unless otherwise indicated.
The requirements for this contract are set out below.
Treatments must be carried out on the supplier’s own premises
Treatments may not be contracted out to a third party
Contractor’s own staff must undertake transportation of collection material. Third party couriers may not be used
Suppliers must be able to demonstrate at the outset (in response to this briefing note) that they have experience in the safe handling and storage of heritage collection materials in a range of formats and conditions Collection items may be bound or loose leaf
For bound items, treatment may be required to the binding, the text block or both;
PH testing and de-acidification will be required in some cases
Treatments must be carried out with high professional and up-to-date skills and compliance with ethical considerations in conservation

The conservation treatment of printed text matter and binding of books in full buckram cased-in split board style The conservation treatment of loose leaf material for binding in post-binder or case format
The conservation and binding of newspapers and periodicals
The conservation of printed text matter and binding in pamphlet style binding
The contract is a non-exclusive ad hoc call off agreement and will be for an initial period of twelve months, commencing 1st April 2017, and subject to extension on an annual basis at the sole discretion of the British Library for a further period of up to three additional years.
