description
NHS Health Education England (HEE - the Commissioner) are seeking a Higher Education Institution (HEI), to deliver a programme of research into Differential Attainment.
Differential Attainment (DA) is where different groups of doctors, progress through training at different levels. Research suggests variation exists across all measures of progression and is widest within examinations. This may be due to a variety of social, economic and cultural factors. We cannot rule out discrimination and bias. There is a responsibility for HEE, NHS Trusts and healthcare providers to ensure fairness and equity for all. We all lose out if doctors do not receive the support, or opportunities, they need to achieve their potential.
Our research at HEE has focused on earlier identification and interventions for doctors in need of support. A series of interventions have shown improvement in educational outcomes in Foundation, Specialty and General Practice programmes and these can be potentially applied across all programmes and specialties. This research work will support the objective by examining the systemic problems and barriers that prevent sufficient career progression for staff from diverse backgrounds and will work on developing interventions which will narrow the attainment gap of trainees from different backgrounds.
