description

The project comprises a two storey extension to the Wolfson Atmospheric Laboratories to provide an additional 525m2 of additional accommodation split across two stories. The main element of the new extension is a two storey wing running from east to west at 90 degrees to the axis of the original WACL building. This modifies the existing linear building into one with an L-shaped plan. The ground floor accommodation comprises laboratories arranged either side of an L-shaped central corridor and the first floor accommodation is a mixture of open plan and cellular office space. The interface between the existing York Plasma Institute building and the new WACL extension comprises a single storey glazed link with a shallow pitched roof.

The link not only joins the two elements together but also provides a secondary entrance to the development.
