description
The University of Manchester will be home to a new national research and innovation centre in advanced materials, the Sir Henry Royce Institute (SHRI). Announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne, in the 2014 autumn statement, the £293M Institute will grow the UK’s world-leading research base in advanced materials research and development, which is fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy.
The new Institute, supported by industrial partners, will have its Hub in Manchester. The Manchester Hub will be supported by satellite centres, or ‘spokes’, at the founding partners, comprising the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, along with National Nuclear Labs (NNL) and the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE).
The Sir Henry Royce Institute (SHRI) will lead the accelerated discovery and development of advanced materials. A High Temperature Tribometer is required for the evaluation of surface treatments and coatings for high temperature tribological applications, to study friction and wear and characteristics of a variety of bulk materials and coatings under dry and lubricated sliding contact conditions.
