It is strategically important due to its key links to the adjacent Leeds Liverpool canal, River Douglas, Wigan Pier Quarter (a mixed-use cultural, residential and commercial development), and with housing delivery within walking distance to an out-of-centre retail provision. The corridor also links into the Station Gateway that will be a HS2 station, currently being developed, which will be active by 2026.
