The Health & Safety Laboratory is seeking to appoint a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) for a period of 3 years with an option to renew for a further 2 years.

The RPA will be required to provide advisory and support services covering all the radiation work and associated equipment used at its Buxton research site and where appropriate support to HSL staff working at incident sites either by phone or / and person at the incident site. In addition, HSL requires the RPA service to cover the use of their X-ray Units and Lasers.

It is anticipated that the services provided would include providing, inter alia, the following (please note: these services are in addition to, or complementary with, those RPA services that are formally set out in various sections of the Ionisation Radiation Regulations 1999, and in associated ACOP, but in particular in relation to Regulation 13 thereof):

Currently the RPA visits HSL for two days each year to carry out their contractual duties, by agreed dates in February and September of each year.

  1. How many times has the RPA been called for advice outside of office hours in the last 3 years? None
  1. How many times has the RPA been required to give advice on-site (outside of the routine audit regime) in the last 3 years? none, other than the normal planned visits (twice a year) other advice given by e-mail or phone.
  1. Do you have plans to expand any aspect of ionising radiation or non-ionising radiation use during the period of the contract?

If so please give details. NO

  1. How many and what type of X-ray equipment is in the X-ray room. One X-Ray (Andrex Smart 225 X-ray equipment)is the only one in the one room).
  1. How often has radiochemical analysis been required from the RPA in the last 3 years? Other than planned 2 yearly & annual leak tests there has been 3 NORM wipe tests.
