The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) is Britain's leading industrial & occupational health and safety research facility. As a Directorate of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), HSL supports HSE’s mission to protect the health and safety of the national workforce by ensuring risks in the workplace are adequately controlled.

The Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) is seeking to appoint an Approved Competent Person as defined in the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) and the supporting HSE/HSC Approved Code of Practice “Safety of Pressure Systems” L122, for a period of 3 years with an option to renew for a further 2 years.

The purpose of the role is to undertake the role of Competent Person as defined in PSSR 2000, for HSL’s operational pressure equipment portfolio , including:

  • advising on the scope of Written Schemes of Examination in accordance with the requirements of Regulation 8, PSSR 2000;
  • drawing up Written Schemes of Examination in accordance with the requirements of Regulation 2, PSSR 2000;
  • carrying out examinations under the Written Schemes of Examination in accordance with Regulation 9, PSSR 2000;
  • maintain records in accordance with Regulation 14, PSSR 2000;
  • advising HSL’s pressure systems manager on maintenance requirements of pressure systems to ensure Regulatory compliance;
  • to provide ad-hoc support to HSL’s Pressure Systems Manager in the application of HSL’s prevailing pressure systems operating procedure, HS-OP-12

It is a prerequisite for appointment that the Competent Person be able to demonstrate that they meet the “Attributes of competent persons” as described in Regulation 8, paragraphs 97-99 inclusive. UKAS accreditation to the British, European and international standard BS EN ISO/IEC 17020: 2004, and SAFed membership is also an essential requirement
