Chatham Placemaking Project: Detailed Design

Medway Council requires a landscape architecture led consultant team to develop the public realm plans for the priority areas identified in the in-progress Chatham Placemaking, Public Realm and Connectivity Project. The area covered by the Project includes the primary route from Chatham railway station to the Chatham waterfront civic space, encompassing Railway Street and Military Road. The Project also includes the waterfront civic space, stretching from the River Medway and the Waterfront Pumping Station to the bus station, the Paddock and the north-western entrance to the Pentagon shopping centre. Each part of the town sequence from the station to the civic space has its own particular problems requiring its own set of responses. It is proposed that a sequential journey of connected locations and points are used as the means to create a strong narrative and compelling resolution. The proposals are developed up to RIBA Stage 3 and have focused on creating an enticing and accessible journey from the station to the high street, waterfront and beyond. Collectively, the proposals ensure that regeneration benefits the wider community. By creating more public space and facilitating pedestrian movement and activity it is hoped that the proposals will create a more convivial and positive experience of Chatham town centre.
