description

UKAEA wishes to procure a Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) offering a wide range of magnetic, thermal and electrical measurements. It has the following minimum requirements:

  • "cryogen free", i.e. operated with a cryocooler;
  • Sample environment controls including fields up to ±14 tesla;
  • variable temperature insert (VTI) with a calibrated Cernox resistive temperature sensor or direct equivalent, provided with a calibration from 1.4 K to room temperature
  • Measurement temperature range at least between 2 and 300 K
  • Time to sweep to 90% of full field less than 10 min, with a thermal load on the insert
  • Field homogeneity ±0.01% over 3 cm on axis
  • Capable of performing the following measurements:
oHeat capacity
oDC magnetic moment (magnetometry)
oAC susceptibility
oDC and AC electrical properties
  • A sample rotator to perform a measurement with the field at different angles
