The Thames Tideway Tunnel project (the Project) will control CSO discharges by intercepting and diverting combined sewage flows into a new storage and transfer tunnel. The main tunnel will run from Acton Storm Tanks in west London to Abbey Mills Pumping Station in the east, where it will connect to the Lee Tunnel, which will transfer the combined sewage to Beckton Sewage Treatment Works for treatment. The Project extends from Acton Storm Tanks in west London, to Abbey Mills Pumping Station in east London. The Project includes associated works at Beckton STW, Shad Thames Pumping Station and Bekesbourne Street.
The geographic layout of the Project and local authorities through which it passes is shown in Figure 1.
The Project comprises:
- a.tunnels:
- i.a main tunnel which will capture and store combined sewage from CSOs along its route and transfer it to Abbey Mills Pumping Station, from where the Lee Tunnel will transfer it for treatment at Beckton Sewage Treatment Works
- ii.11 connection tunnels, which will link flows from CSOs to the main tunnel.
- b.Worksites:
- i.five main tunnel Worksites (drive and/or reception sites)
- ii.16 CSO Worksites
- iii.two System modification Worksites Thames Tideway Tunnel
- iv.works at Beckton Sewage Treatment works.
Section 4: Scope of Works
As part of the works for the Thames Tideway West project at Hammersmith Pumping Station (HAMPS), BMB are required to construct a Connection Culvert that will take the storm flows from the existing Thames Water Infrastructure into the new Tideway Tunnels and a Deaeration Gallery providing ventilation throughout the system. The pumping station is sited to the north of the River Thames, just west of the Hammersmith Bridge. These works are to run concurrently with other BMB areas of work including CSO Drop Shaft and Inlet Channel works. Full welfare facilities will be provided to all sub-contractors.
This is for the construction of the permanent RC structures detailed below and include:

All method statements and ITP's will be complied by BMB with input from the FRC Subcontractor on all areas of the construction process.
All materials that will be used in the permanent works will be supplied by BMB along with the associated Materials Compliance Record (MCRs) again with full input from the FRC Subcontractor.
BMB will supply the concrete and reinforcement for all permanent works including blinding.
The successful bidder will provide all means of concrete placement and labour to carry out the works safely, efficiently and to a high-quality standard.
All temporary materials required and used for the construction of these phases of work will be supplied by the FRC Subcontractor.
