Brief Description of Requirement
RAL Space is STFC's 'Space Department'. It is one of seven operational departments located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and is dedicated to supporting the programmes of the STFC, as well as undertaking a large number of contracts for agencies, industry and other commercial customers. RAL Space provides world-leading research and technology development, space test facilities, instrument and mission design, and studies of the science and technology requirement for new missions. Much of the Department's work is in collaboration with university research groups and a range of institutes around the world. RAL Space has been in the business of producing instruments and software for space flight, and in building and operating ground segments, on both NASA-led and ESA-led missions, since the mid 1970's. RAL Space is also a prime technical institute of the UK Space Agency and supports the space community in the provision of space and ground based studies of the Earth and its atmosphere, of astronomy, planetary/solar system science, and solar-terrestrial phenomena. As well as providing the complete range of skills and technology necessary for the construction of space instruments, RAL Space also supports a number of key technology development programmes, aimed at advancing the state-of-the-art in areas of strategic importance to the space community.
This requirement is for the multi layer insulation (MLI) materials being procured by the Science and Technology Facilities Council for the manufacture of the Flight Model (FM) MLI for the Türksat 6A satellite.
