Assessing the potential for biological control for weeds impacting on Water Framework Directive targets

The Natural control of Himalayan balsam, Floating pennywort and Australian swamp stonecrop.

• To achieve establishment in the wild of the rust fungus, Puccinia komarovii var. glanduliferae, for the biological control of Himalayan balsam and provide results of monitoring to show that it is established in the wild, or does not appear to have established.
• To progress lab-based research on control agents for the most promising agent for either Floating pennywort or Australian swamp stonecrop to the point of application for licence to release it.
• To pause lab-based testing of agents for the other weed, instead maintaining the cultures of promising agents for future use.
